Bible Reading: John 6:25-59
(A series on the Gospel of John – 15)
If people saw a miracle they would believe! Do you sometimes think that? Miracles are described as sign posts, pointing people to Jesus, so they will come to know who he is. When Jesus healed the Royal Official’s son, he believed, and so did his entire family. Sadly, not everyone responds in this way.
It is the day after 5000 people have been fed on the slopes of the Sea of Galilee. These people had seen many miracles take place, so they are looking for Jesus again. When exciting things are taking place, crowds quickly gather. Jesus, however, sees beyond the outward and looks at the heart.
He knows they are looking for him so he can meet their material and physical needs. Although Jesus is deeply moved by their needs, he has come to do far more than provide bread for them. Their deep inner needs could be met, if they understood he was the true Bread of Life. Most however, are not interested in knowing the meaning of these signs, nor are they hungry for spiritual things.
Today, many people are like that. The spectacular, the supernatural is exciting, but not all are interested in knowing who Jesus is. Don’t be discouraged if some don’t believe. This happened when Jesus was on earth too!
What about us though? Is our focus just on material and physical things? Jesus cares about those needs, but he has much more for us. He is the only one who can give us inner contentment, a sense of purpose and a hope that stretches into eternity. In this busy, consumer driven world, let’s remember who Jesus is. He is the Bread of Life. Let’s respond to his invitation to come.
