At times it seems as if God works in our lives without us having to do anything! He takes pleasure in granting us the desires of our heart. That is what happened to the Shunammite woman. Elisha had said she would have a child, and just as was promised she gave birth to a son.
However there are times when our faith is stretched, when we need to hold on to those promises. The woman’s son was now a young boy and had gone to the fields with his father. Suddenly he cried out, “My head! My head!” Within hours he lay lifeless in his mother’s arms.
How would you respond if that was your child? The Shunammite’s response is remarkable. She carried her son to the room they had built for Elisha, laid him on the bed and closed the door. It was as if she was placing him in God’s care. Then she called her husband, asking for a servant to bring a donkey so she could go to the man of God. When he asked why she wanted to go at this time she simply replied, “It’s all right.”
It’s all right! Her son lay dead on the prophet’s bed! Yet she held onto his promise, “You will have a son.” If she had told her husband or the servants, the weeping, the wailing, and the questions would begin. There is a time not to speak. Words carry power. Often we negate the promises of God with the words we speak.
Are you facing a situation where it seems as if the promises are being taken from you? Perhaps you are questioning, doubting and struggling with trusting God. Let’s learn from this woman. She had placed her son in God’s care and could say, “It’s all right.” That’s where we need to begin. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him, for He cares for you.”
The Shunammite’s faith made way for a glorious miracle to take place, as we will see in the next devotional. Remember that God is still the same today! He can work in your situation too. Hold onto those promises and guard your words.
