Wait on the Lord – 4

The eagle is capable of soaring high into the sky, not by flapping its’ wings, but by spreading them out and allowing the wind to carry him up.  This is the picture we see in Isaiah 40:31, ‘They will soar on wings like eagles …’
For the eagle to make these magnificent flights it needs time to rest.
Whenever it is injured it will sit on a rock, allowing the sun to heal its’ body.  Often we are too busy to rest.  We don’t allow time for the Son of God to heal us.  We don’t wait in the warmth of his presence.  And yet the only way to soar like an eagle is to learn to wait on the Lord and receive his strength.  How can we do that?

First of all we need to learn to be still!  Remember Jesus said, “When you pray, go in and shut the door.”  Find a quiet place.  However this is not just something we do outwardly, we need to learn to be quiet on the inside too, and to shut the door to all our other thoughts.  Psalm 46:10 says, ‘Be still and know that I am God.’

The word ‘wait’ means to look to, to trust, to wait expectantly.  Focus your heart and mind on the Lord, believing that he will renew you.  Just as the eagle sits in the sun and waits, so we are to come and soak in God’s love, receiving forgiveness, healing and refreshment.

The eagle waits for the right air current, then stretches out its’ wings and allows that current to carry him high.  In the same way we need to wait and allow the wind of the Holy Spirit to lift us up.  When we do, we will no longer struggle to live the Christian life, but we will have strength to face the day.  Try it!
